Profile Summary

Dr. Emily Bagarukayo is married with 4 children. She is employed at the School of Computing and Informatics Technology, College of Computing and Information Sciences, Makerere University. She is a consultant on Computing and ICT issues. She is an eminent lecturer, researcher with over 20 years’ experience, and holds a PhD in Information Science degree (Radboud University Nijmegen, Netherlands), Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Technologies (UCT), Masters of Computer Science (Mak) and Bachelor of Computer Science (Hons) (MUST). She is a research associate at the International Center of IT and Development (ICITD), Southern University, USA. 

She undertook her doctoral research in the e-Learning area, specifically on the impact of technology like Digital Learning Environments, Multimedia in education and industry, on learning; specific research interests include use of technology to support personalized learning; and development of instructional content. For her doctoral research, she developed a Learning by Construction Approach for improvement of Higher Order Cognitive Skills, Building Capacity and infrastructure in Least Developing Countries. Of recent she has ventured into research on the impact of social software on learning and ICT4D research. She lectures courses in Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Systems including Computer Applications, E-commerce, Operating Systems Theory and Design, Computer Networking, Systems Analysis and Design, Management Information Systems, Web design and Software Engineering at undergraduate and post graduate levels. She has mentored and supervised several student researches at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the areas of information systems, Databases, Multimedia among others. She has also authored over 26 peer reviewed journal, conference publications and book chapters.

ICT4D, e services like e-learning, e health and e-governance, the use of technology to support personalized learning; in particular, the development of instructional content for enhancing the learners’ attainment of Higher Order Cognitive Skills, building capacity and infrastructure in Least Developed Countries. The impact of Social Software on students’ learning is also an area of interest. Other research interests include IT Policy and Adoption in Sub Saharan Africa, Internet Diffusion in Sub Saharan Africa, among others.
