Programme Name and Duration
The programme name is Postgraduate Diploma of Information Technology (PGDIT). The program will be hosted at the Department of Information Technology. The programme runs for one academic year comprising of two (2) semesters and a recess term.
This is an evening programme that is completely privately sponsored. The duration for the Postgraduate Diploma in Information Technology (PGDIT) programme is one (1) academic year comprising of 2 semesters and a Recess Term. Students under the PGDIT course will be required to take two semesters of course work at the end of which they will be required to do a project.
Programme Description
The Postgraduate Diploma in Information Technology (PGDIT) programme provides an opportunity to prospective students to undertake training in IT and its application in business processes at a Master’s degree level in Uganda. The revised PGDIT programme focuses on information technologies such as Internet and web, emerging technologies, with an emphasis on their management and security. The courses delivered in this curriculum will also have a strong research and development bias to address the continuously changing societal needs. The program aims at providing an enduring foundation for future professional and academic growth. This programme will further enhance competencies in technology innovations in the various sectors such as health, education, agriculture and government. PGDIT graduates have an opportunity to join the Master of Information Technology (MIT) degree programme in the 2nd year of study upon fulfilling the requisite requirements.
The objectives of the programme are to:
- To provide students with in depth theoretical and practical knowledge relating to Information Technology relevant to the public and private sectors
- To provide students with relevant knowledge and skills in Information Technology application, management and development.
- To equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to meet the evolving demands of the Information Technology
- To provide students with research skills that will help them grow with the technological advancements as well as help them participate in the development of new technologies relevant to various sectors such as health, education, agriculture and government.
- To improve graduates in PGD Information Technology.
- Increased advanced human resource capacity in the Information Technology discipline in both public and private
- Improved theoretical and practical skills for the Information Technology sector among
- Enhanced competencies in technology innovations in the various sectors such as health, education, agriculture and
- Increased multi-disciplinary collaborations and
- Increased number of PDG in Information Technology graduates.
The revision of the PGD IT curriculum is premised on the increasing demand for advanced skills in IT that has created an opportunity for a better programme to address the need for highly trained graduates, for academia and research. addressing this demand is in line with the development priorities of the government of Uganda as noted in Vision 2040. ICT training training and skilling are seen as enablers of other sectors of the economy for rapid socio- economic transformation. It envisages mainstreaming ICT s in education to take advantage of ICT-enabled learning and to prepare future generations of ICT-savvy workers, and ensure their effective utilization. A relevant ICT training curriculum also aligns to SDG 9 that emphasizes bridging the digital divide, as one of the ways to facilitate sustainable development.
Revising this curriculum is also in tandem with the requirement by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) for a periodic review of curricula based on programme cycles of three to five years. As such the revised curriculum:
- Caters for the ever-increasing demands and fast changing nature of the Information Technology field that requires a graduate with high quality research skills within and outside the
- Expose students to the development and management of a wider range of technologies in tandem with current trends and societal needs,
- Introduces new courses to cater for the emerging industrial trends in Information Technology application, management and
- Has modified content of some retained courses to expand the depth and breadth in various areas to match the current trends
- Varies the mode of delivery of courses to accommodate a student centered and research oriented approach.
To qualify for admission, a candidate must fulfill the minimum Makerere University entry requirements for a Postgraduate diploma, and in addition a candidate must be a holder of either:
- A bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Information Systems, Computer Science, Software Engineering and Computer Engineering from a recognized University/Institution; or
Any other bachelor’s degree in the physical sciences, humanities and social sciences a recognized University/Institution, with evidence of having undertaken relevant courses or certifications in Information Technology.
For the foreseeable future, it is anticipated that PGDIT program will continue to attract students with a wide range of backgrounds. In traditional graduate programmes, it is assumed that entering students have a common background obtained through an undergraduate degree in that field. The PGDIT programme may also attract experienced individuals including IT professionals and people seeking career changes. The architecture of the PGDIT programme accommodates this wide diversity of backgrounds and learning environments. Specifically, the PGDIT programme is appropriate for:
- New graduates with degrees in Information technology, information systems, computer science, software engineering, computer engineering, business degrees; and other bachelor degrees in a range of fields including the humanities, social science, engineering, and physical science with evidence of having taken acceptable courses in information technology.
- Experienced IT professionals seeking to upgrade skills and to understand management issues
- Experienced management professionals seeking skills in managing technology

Graduation Load
