Three first-year students for the academic year 202/2023 from the College of Computing and Information Sciences (CoCIS) on Thursday 3rd November 2022 won scholastic materials worth over 100 thousand shillings each after emerging winners during the orientation raffle and quiz.

Blasio Nabasa, Tukwasibwe Martin, and Rhino Martin won school bags, counter books, and an assortment of school items after attempting several quizzes to test their listening and comprehension skills during the second session of the freshers’ orientation.

The freshers assembled in Big Lab 2 Block B and the lucky few who picked raffle tickets were asked basic questions such as who heads Makerere university and their college, their course names and the departments, the blocks that make up the college, and who their principal was among others.

The college organized the second session of the fresher’s orientation following a low turn up on the First one held on 17^th September 2022. At that time, the majority of the freshers were government-sponsored but this time, Private students were also on board for orientation.

The orientation was presided over by the Principal CoCIS Prof. Tonny Oyana assisted by his Deputy Dr. Peter Nabende, Deans, Heads of departments and administrative units, and other officials from university supportive departments.

Speaking during the occasion, Prof. Oyana emphasized the need for students to prioritize and to balance their social and academic lives.

“We get lost in lots of fun because we don’t prioritize. The three things that are critical to your success are your teacher, the subject matter, and the resources you need.  Two things drive success, social and academic success but you must balance. It is okay to go dancing, and drink but, you must balance”, The Principal stressed.

Prof. Oyana advised students to desist from being overwhelmed saying being overwhelmed does not allow them to think clearly.

“Manage your time wisely by accomplishing your goals every day and listening to what the teachers require. It is important to focus to avoid destruction by other things. Some experiences are gainful. Experiences are painful that is the real world but endurance leads to success”, Prof. Oyana advised.

Members from the college management and administrative units including representatives from the university supportive units welcomed freshers to Makerere University congratulating them upon their success in joining CoCIS and Makerere.

Speaker after speaker advised students on academic, health, social, security, and spiritual life while on campus.

The Deputy Principal Dr. Peter Nabende urged students to familiarize themselves with the structures within the college and approach the responsible office to in case they have issues.

Dr. Nabende congratulated students for making it to COCIS adding that they were in one of the most relevant and unique units offering programmes that impact all other disciplines.

Nabende implores students to uphold the college vision, mission, and core values accessible on the and to desist from acts of violence and indiscipline saying their primary objective is to focus on academics and earn the degree in the specified program time.

The College Registrar Mr. Patrick Feni said this was the final orientation because initially, the orientation had government-sponsored students and there was a need to orient the privately sponsored students to know the learning environment and how to proceed.

Mr. Feni advised students to pay fees and register on time saying it is mandatory to register to become a Bonafede student of Makerere University.

Feni urged students to utilize their time responsibly and cautioned them against the change of program unless it’s called for and done an informed decision.
