Programme Name and Duration
The name of the program is Postgraduate Diploma of Information Systems. The program is run as an evening program with privately sponsored students. The duration of the program is one year and it consists of two semesters and one recess term. In this curriculum, students are required to take two semesters of coursework and one recess term of project work at the end of which they are required to have a project report.
Programme Description
The Postgraduate Diploma in Information Systems provides world class training, knowledge, and skills in the Information Systems discipline at the Postgraduate level in Uganda. The program focuses on areas such as: the core of information systems (which involves studying relationships between people, processes, and technology in an enterprise context), managing the behavior of an organization towards work systems that are Information Technology (IT) reliant, and managing data and information. The program blends theory and practice into a learning experience that develops skills applicable to solving real-world problems including problems that are complex. The program aims at providing an enduring foundation for future professional and academic growth.
Goal
The goal of the program is to train students at the level of Postgraduate Diploma in Information Systems in order for them to continue graduate studies in Information Systems or meet IS/ICT professional goals.
Objectives
The objectives of the Postgraduate Diploma of Information Systems program are:
- To build an advanced human resource capacity in the information systems discipline in both public and private sectors to meet IS/ICT professional and research
- To foster inter-disciplinary studies which allow the study and application of computing and ICT knowledge in non-computing and non-ICT
- To address the increasing demand for Information Systems training at Postgraduate Diploma level
- To develop professionals with theoretical and practical knowledge and skills in the Information and Communication Technology sector.
- Increased advanced human resource capacity in the information systems discipline in both public and private
- Increased multi-disciplinary collaborations and
- Increased Postgraduate Diploma of Information Systems
- Increased expertise in the Information and Communications Technologies sector.
To qualify for admission to the Postgraduate Diploma of Information Systems, a candidate must fulfill the general Makerere University entry requirements for Postgraduate Diploma, and in addition, the candidate must be a holder of either:
- A Bachelor’s Degree of Information Systems or Information Technology or Computer Science or Software Engineering or Computer Engineering or Business Computing from a recognized university / institution; or
- Any other relevant Degree from a recognized university / institution with evidence of having taken a considerable number of acceptable courses related to the Information Systems discipline.
For the foreseeable future, it is anticipated that Information Systems programmes will continue to attract students with a wide range of backgrounds. In traditional graduate programmes, it is always assumed that students who enroll have a related background obtained through an undergraduate degree in that field. The Postgraduate Diploma of Information Systems program may also attract experienced students including Information Systems professionals, but it can also attract people seeking career change to ICT-related fields. This curriculum is designed to accommodate students from various backgrounds and learning environments. Specifically, the Postgraduate Diploma of Information Systems program is appropriate for:
- Graduates with Bachelor degrees in Information Systems, Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Business with an Information Systems concentration, and any other Bachelor degree with evidence of having taken relevant acceptable courses related to the Information Systems
- Experienced Information Systems professionals seeking to upgrade their knowledge and skills and to understand management associated with information
- Experienced management professionals seeking skills in managing technology.
- Professionals with various backgrounds for example Engineering, Health, Education, Agriculture, etc whose career involves the use of ICTs and who seek a career in the Information Systems discipline
