Makerere University’s College of Computing and Information Sciences Welcomes Freshmen with a Focus on Academic Excellence

The College of Computing and Information Sciences (CoCIS) at Makerere University recently held an orientation for its freshmen, with a focus on academic excellence and success.

Over 800 students were in attendance during this session. The new students will be doing different programmes under the two schools; the School of Computing and Information Technology (SCIT) and the East African School of Library and Information Science (EASLIS). CoCIS is a major ICT training and research center in Africa.

In his remarks, Professor Tonny Oyana, the Principal of the College, pestered the new students to prioritize academic success and managing time effectively in their university life.
“University is fine. It’s not some hard stuff for professors or bright people. University is a lot of fun, but you must prioritize your academic success,” Professor Oyana said.

He also highlighted the need for students to balance their social and academic activities, noting that “you all can get an A, but you must work for it.”

The Principal encouraged students to take advantage of the college’s support services, including the library and counseling services, to help them succeed in their studies. “Map your support services. What are your support services? Library? Counseling? Map them and use them to succeed in your school,” he advised.

Professor Oyana also emphasized the importance of hard work, focus, and discipline in achieving success. “Hard work produces success, Focus and discipline are key to success,” he said.

The orientation was designed to help freshmen transition smoothly into university life and to provide them with the necessary tools and resources to succeed.

The college’s commitment to academic excellence is reflected in its state-of-the-art facilities and experienced faculty. The college offers a range of programs in computing and information sciences, including computer science, information technology, and information systems.

Dr. Peter Nabende, the Deputy Principal congratulated the freshmen on making it to the college emphasizing their importance in transforming the world. He encouraged students to take initiative in finding answers to their questions, utilizing resources such as the college website and Google. He also highlighted the various services and facilities available on campus, including spiritual support, health services, sports, and counseling.

Dr. Nabende stressed that the college is an ecosystem of support, with colleagues willing to respond to inquiries and provide help when needed.

He encouraged students to take advantage of these resources to succeed in their academic pursuits.

On her part, Ms. Ruth Iteu, the College Registrar told freshmen; ‘your future is in your hands.’ “Make sure most of your time is spent reading and learning.” She also highlighted the college’s commitment to producing job creators, rather than job seekers, and encouraged students to choose their course units wisely.

She appealed to students to take advantage of the college’s support services, including academic advising and counseling. “We are here to help you. Don’t wait to be warned. Tell us where things are not going right, she advised.

“Ms. Iteu also emphasized the importance of understanding the college’s policies and procedures, including those related to withdrawal, academic performance, and abscondment. “Please always come back to tell us what happened to you so that we don’t write you off,” she advised.

The orientation also featured Mr. Geoffrey Kalebo, the Program Director of the Emerging Leaders Program (ELP), who inked the importance of self-awareness, self-regulation, and empathy in leadership.

He introduced the S.A.F.E. campaign, which stands for Sexually Fortified, Addiction-Free, Financially Faithful, and Education-Focused. The program aims to support students in their academic and personal lives, providing resources and mentorship to help them succeed.

Mr. Kalebo encouraged students to take advantage of the program’s services, including counseling and support, to navigate the challenges of university life. He also shared a personal story about the importance of intervention and support, highlighting the program’s role in fostering a sense of community and responsibility among students.
